Crash – Impaired

A young man from the Verona area is facing charges after a single vehicle crash in Kingston early this morning.

Police didn’t find a driver when they responded to the report of the crash at Yonge and Union Streets around 1:20 a.m.

A man was arrested about an hour afterwards.

He will be charged with impaired driving, leaving the scene of the crash and public mischief for reporting the vehicle had been stolen.

Dog Rescue

The message from Kingston Police is clear – don’t leave a dog in a parked car in the sun.

A couple from Brockville will have to pay for the cost of replacing a window in their SUV after it was smashed by a Kingston police officer on Tuesday.

The officer says a Chihuahua had been in the vehicle for 45 minutes with two windows open a crack and an empty water bowl.

The couple from Brockville later returned to the vehicle and told the officer the dog belonged to their daughter who was getting medical care in Kingston and they got off with a warning.

Collins Bay Max – Search

There’s more tension in the maximum security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

A lockdown just ended following the death of an inmate and now a new lockdown has been put in place to allow correctional officers to conduct an exceptional search for safety purposes.

The lockdown and search of the maximum security unit at Collins Bay got underway on Tuesday afternoon.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

Tamarack – Nortel

A Kingston builder has plans for a large housing development on land where the old Nortel factory used to sit near the corner of Gardiners Road and Taylor Kidd Boulevard.

Tamarack Homes plans to build a thousand housing units and commercial space on the property.

Tamarack has applied for the land to be rezoned from industrial to residential and hopes to start construction next year.

New Business Announcement

Kingston’s Mayor says there will be some positive news on the economic development front in the near future.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says an international company will be locating in Kingston.  He says he can’t say anything more until the company is ready to make the announcement.

Auto Insurance

The Ontario government admits it won’t meet its goal of cutting your auto insurance premiums 15% by August.

As a matter of fact – the provinces insurance regulator says more than half of the companies have increased rates by just less than one percent.

Auto premiums in Ontario are 45 per cent higher than Alberta and about twice as high as in the Maritimes.
