If you’ve decided on who you are voting for in the federal election – advance polls open today and will be open right through holiday Monday.

The polling stations will be open from noon to 8:00 p.m.

The information you need to vote is on your voter registration card.

Election day in Canada is Monday, October 19th.

Inmates Voting

Federal inmates will go to the polls today.

It is the fifth time prisoners have been allowed to cast ballots in a federal election.  Voter turnout in prisons has been steadily growing over the years.  Elections Canada says about 25 per cent of convicts voted in 2004.  That grew to about 45 per cent in 2011.

Inmates vote for candidates in their home ridings, not the ridings where their institution is located.

Collins Bay Institution is the only federal pen in Kingston and the Islands.

OPSEU Contract

People who work for the Ontario government in Kingston and across the province will be getting a wage increase.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union says the tentative three-year deal with the government doesn’t have a wage increase for this year…but union members will be in line for a 1.4 per cent lump sum in 2016, and a 1.4 per cent increase in 2017.

OP-SEU also says the deal requires the province to work with the union before it privatizes or sells off services.

Hector in Nepal

Former Kingston City Councillor Dorothy Hector is leading the UN World Food Program in Nepal after her unsuccessful bid for mayor in Kingston last fall

Nepal is trying to recover from a devastating earthquake in April.

Hector is the Coordinator for Remote Access Operations for the Food Program in Nepal.

She says they are delivering cargo to the most remote village and repairing trails for transporting cargo.

She’s been facing the challenges the people of Nepal have with no electricity in most places – no gasoline – she drove to work this week in an electric car.

Easter Seals

One of the most popular fund raising events for Easter Seals takes place tomorrow on Wolfe Island and officials are concerned that the smaller ferry will have an impact on attendance for The Wolfe Island Corn Maze.

They’re encouraging people to walk onto the ferry and take the shuttle to Marysville where they’ll have volunteers taking people to the Corn Maze.

Hulton’s Bus Lines is also doing two special shuttles from the ferry to the corn maze and back tomorrow:

Shuttle from the 11:30 ferry from Kingston –  returning on the 2:30 ferry

Shuttle from the 2:00 ferry from Kingston – returning to the 4:30 ferry
