Fire – Man Charged

A Kingston man has been charged after firefighters and police discovered a bizarre scene inside an apartment on Wilson Street.

Firefighters had to force their way into the apartment around 11:30 Monday night to put out a small fire.

They found household items inside or on top of kitchen appliances and in the bathroom sink to create fire and electrical hazards.

Investigators also found fire and smoke alarms may have been disabled.

Police arrested a 51 year old man early yesterday morning on Division Street.

He’s been charged with Mischief Endangering Life.

Shafia’s Appeal

A hearing on an appeal in the honour killing murder case of the Shafias will be heard in two months.

62 year old Mohammad Shafia, his 45 year old wife Tooba and their 24 year old son Hamed claim they were victims of cultural stereotyping and overwhelmingly prejudicial evidence

Their convictions four years ago came after the bodies of three Shafia sisters and Mohammad’s first wife, 52 year old Rona Amir were found in a car submerged in the Kingston Mills lock in June of 2009.

Napanee – Fire Chief

Napanee is looking for a new fire chief.

Terry Gervais has announced he is retiring after serving in various fire services for the past 35 years.

Gervais started his career in the former Kingston Township and came to Napanee in 2011 from the Ottawa fire service.

He’ll remain on the job until March of 2016.

Memorial Centre School

The push for Kingston City Council to reconsider the Memorial Centre as a site for Kingston’s new high school continues tonight.

The school councils of KCVI and QECVI want city council to reconsider.  The Sydenham District Association has also voted in favour of the Memorial Centre site.

The three groups are hosting a town hall meeting starting at 6:30 tonight in the auditorium of KCVI.

Organizers are hoping to get a good turnout of city councillors for the session.  It is up to a city councillor who voted in favour of not using the Memorial Centre to make a motion to reconsider the site.

Empire – Awards

Kingston’s Empire Life has won four awards for outstanding achievement in marketing and communications.

Empire received three Awards of Excellence and an honourable for instructional material for clients and advisors.

The awards were presented at the annual conference gala for the Insurance and Financial Communications Association held in Washington, D. C. at the end of September.

Ice Berg

A sculpture of an ice berg from Kingston will become part of an exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa.

The steel iceberg was crafted by Pure Ingenuity on Development Drive.

The engineering firm specializes in custom design and fabrication of stainless steel.

The Kingston company built the forty foot tall iceberg in three sections so it could be transported to Ottawa.

The sculpture was designed by Canadian Bill Lishman.

Wolfe Island Meeting

People frustrated with ferry service for Wolfe Island get to meet Ontario’s Transportation Minister at a town hall meeting on the island tonight.

Steven Del Duca will attend the meeting at 7 p.m. in the Community Hall on Wolfe Island.

The Wolfe Islander was supposed to return from an inspection and refit in Hamilton by Canada Day.

Del Duca is expected to update the situation with the ferry and the environmental assessment for a permanent backup ferry.
