Day of Remembrance

People gathered in Sydenham Street United Church on Sunday afternoon to remember the victims of the Montreal massacre and all victims of violence against women.

About 150 people gathered for the ceremony on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Reverend Elizabeth Macdonald told the gathering it was important for people to be comforted, strengthened and inspired to take action.

The service yesterday was in honour of the 14 women killed in 1989 at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal and remembered local victims of violence and missing and murdered native women.

National Day of Remembrance – Federal

Prime Minister Trudeau used the 26th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre to stress the importance of stopping violence against women and girls.

He was in Montreal yesterday.

Trudeau said his government will introduce legislation to improve support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.  He also renewed the pledge to launch an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women.

Child Luring Investigation

A 29 year old man from Kingston is the latest person arrested in a joint investigation into child luring.

Police in Kingston and the OPP were involved in Project Overwatch and four people had already been charged after being arrested in November.

29-year-old Matias Wengiel of Kingston was arrested last Wednesday and charged with two counts of luring.

64 year old Earl Bray of Kingston, 51 year old Carmen Benn of Lyndhurst, 56 year old Steve Dubenofsky of Kingston and 25 year old Andrew Whan of Verona have already been charged.

A 28 year old man from Carleton Place was arrested during the original investigation but hasn’t been charged yet.

Operation Red Nose

113 people and their vehicles got a ride home on the weekend thanks to Operation Red Nose in Kingston.

It was the second weekend of operation this season for the program aimed at reducing drunk driving.

Organizers say more volunteers are needed because they expect it to be busier leading up to Christmas.

65 people volunteered Friday night and there were 63 volunteers on Saturday night.

The program has collected just over $5,000 for local charities.

Wolfe Island Ferry

The Wolfe Island Ferry has started using the winter dock.

The Ferry began leaving from the Dawsons Point Terminal at 5:45 this morning.

It is also coming up to maintenance time for the ferry.  It will be undergoing maintenance on Wednesday and will be out of service from 9:30 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon.

Downtown – Free Parking

There is free parking being offered in city parking lots in downtown Kingston on Saturdays…including Boxing Day.

The promotion is aimed at attracting more people to the downtown during the busy holiday shopping period.

On street parking and parking for special events is not included in the promotion and the free parking is only available in city owned lots on Saturdays.

Holy Cross

Students at Holy Cross will be presenting a cheque to the chair of the St. Paul the Apostle Church Refugee Sponsorship Committee today.

The school’s Advent Campaign held several events and has raised $1,000 to support a refugee family from Syria.

Classes at Holy Cross are also collecting money for St. Vincent de Paul, Birthright Kingston and a School Mission Trip to support building a house in Jamaica.
