C-Difficile – Kingston General

The U-S National Institutes of Health has awarded up to $1.2 million to researchers at Kingston General for their work on a new treatment for the sometimes fatal C-difficile infection….an infection people get in hospitals.  The funding will allow researchers further develop “Repoopulate,”  a synthetically derived alternative to fecal transplants, used to treat recurrent C-difficile infections.

Early trials, with a small number of patients at Kingston General Hospital, have shown it is a highly effective in curing C-difficile.

Museum Money

The city has handed out over a quarter of a million dollars to 20 local museums, clubs, associations and community groups.

The Kingston Heritage Grants were awarded during a ceremony at city hall yesterday.

The Kingston Association of Museums, Art Galleries and Historic Sites received a two-year grant of $113,200 to hire a coordinator to organize the Beyond Classrooms Kingston program.

The Museum of Health Care at Kingston received the largest grant of $56,000…plus a $9,000 grant for a special exhibition. The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes was next with a grant of $52,000.

Robotics Tournament

Innovative kids and robots…two teams from Kingston finished in the top three at the First Lego League Ontario East Championship.

40 teams were involved in the competition in Oshawa on Saturday.  The challenge was to provide an innovative solution to a real world waste problem as well as design, build and program a robot for a table top competition.

Team High Tech from Kingston finished second.  The team of four girls aged 12 and 13 collected used Lego at the tournament to donate to the Library’s Lego My Library program and Boys and Girls Club.

The Comet Warriors from École Cathédrale placed third.  They used spinning magnets to create a system to salvage silicon sawdust created during the manufacturing of silicon wafers for solar panels.

It is one of seven teams invited to the First Lego League Global Innovation Award Ceremony in Toronto on February 27 where one team will get a $20,000 grant to further develop their solution.

Robbery

Kingston Police say the suspect in a convenience store robbery made his getaway on a bicycle.

The Sun Convenience Store at the Corner of Montreal Street and John Counter Boulevard was robbed at around 7pm Monday night.

Nobody was injured.

Police searched the area last night but failed to find a suspect.

Theft Arrest

A 47 year old Kingston man is facing theft and drug charges after being arrested Saturday night.

Police say they were called by an eagle-eyed witness who saw someone checking out vehicles in the Hamilton and Alfred Street area.

Gordon Shelley remains behind bars on charges of attempted theft, possession of marijuana and possession of break in tools.

Impaired

A woman from Amherstview has been charged with impaired driving after being stopped during a RIDE check.

The RIDE check was set up on Country Road 2 just east of Napanee on Saturday night…just after midnight a vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested.

35 year old Jennifer Long has been charged with impaired driving.

Two Impaired

Kingston Police arrested two people for impaired driving at almost the same time early Sunday morning.

Officers arrested a 20 year old man from Frankford after noticing a vehicle go through a stop sign.

Shortly after stopping that vehicle on Princess Street near University…a witness contacted Kingston Police after a Honda Civic hitting a snowbank and riding up on the sidewalk on Brock Street near Victoria Street.  A 26 year old Kingston man was arrested.

Both men have been charged with driving with over the legal limit of alcohol in their bloodstream.

Budget Consultation

The Ontario government is holding a 2016 budget consultation session at Kingston City Hall this afternoon.

Associate Finance Minister Mitzie Hunter and Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala will host the session from 3:30 to 5:30 this afternoon.

Napanee Arrest

A trespassing complaint has resulted in other charges for a 22 year old man from Napanee.

Police were called to a Dundas Street apartment on Saturday to investigate the trespassing complaint.  They seized a small amount of marijuana and have charged Timothy  Nelson with possession and an assault that took place on January 13th.
