KEDCO Review

There may be no future for the Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

Several people called for the organization to be disbanded at a town hall meeting last night.

About a hundred people attended the session to give feedback to the committee reviewing the future of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

The co-chair of the review committee, city councillor Jeff McLaren told the meeting the option of getting rid of the agency will be on the table.

Wind Turbines – Police

This may come as a shock for residents of Frontenac Islands Township.

They’ve been hit with a bill for policing that includes an extra $26,000 for the OPP to police wind turbines on Wolfe Island.

Mayor Denis Doyle tells the Whig municipalities are being charged the same rate for policing a wind turbine and a house.

It caught the township by surprise and the extra money will have to come from property taxes.

The province is currently considering the issue of how much police can charge for policing wind turbines.

Robbery – Arrest

A 47 year old Kingston man has been charged with robbing the Sun Convenience Store on Tuesday night.

The man was arrested after police investigated a complaint in the area of Princess and Barrie Street at 6:45 yesterday morning.  He was charged with breaking into the A&W at Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and Princess Street on New Year’s.

After further investigation police also charged him with the Sun Convenience robbery and three break-ins that took place between December 18th and January 3rd.

Elgin Break In

Police are looking for two men after a break in at Kenney’s Plumbing on Main Street in Elgin was reported Sunday night.  They say the men used a dark coloured vehicle – similar to a Buick to make their getaway.

The thieves forced open the back door of the business and stole a boat motor, generator, welder, cash register, chain saw and other equipment.

Rideau Lakes OPP is asking anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

Fire Call

Kingston Police were called in when firefighters ran into a man who didn’t want to have anything to do with them at an apartment on Russell Street.

Firefighters were called to 63 Russell Street around 10 a.m. yesterday after a pot left on a stove created a lot of smoke.

A man in the apartment became combative with firefighters and police were called.

The man was treated for smoke inhalation – but refused to go to hospital.

Economic Update

The Chief Economist of the Business Development Bank of Canada will provide an economic update to members of the Great Kingston Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon today at the Holiday Inn.

Pierre Cleroux is also Vice President of Research at BDC.

He’ll be talking about changing consumer behavior and how businesses can capitalize on the changes.

Glenora Ferry

People using the Glenora Ferry were stranded yesterday because of a problem with scheduled maintenance on the ferry.

The maintenance was supposed to take place between 9:30 in the morning and 3:00 in the afternoon – but the ferry wasn’t able to resume operating until around 7 last night because of issue with the maintenance work.
