Home Invasion

Kingston Police is still looking for suspects following a break in and robbery at a home on Connaught Street.

Police were called to the home at 87 Connaught Street around 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

A man says he was robbed at knife point by a woman and two men.

Police say nobody was injured during the robbery and the suspects made their getaway in a car.

Cancoil Expansion

A Kingston company is expanding.

Cancoil Thermal has announced plans to expand into a new building on Innovation Drive.  It will continue to operate at its current location on John F. Scott Road.

Cancoil makes equipment for heating, cooling, ventilation and refrigeration systems.

It currently employs 130 people and the expansion may add another 100 jobs.

Future of KP – POH

The future of Kingston Penitentiary is still unclear…but Kingston City Council has set the wheels in motion for a visioning exercise with the federal government to determine the future of the prison property and the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.

Last night…City Council approved spending an additional 50 thousand dollars for the visioning project on top of $50,000 it approved last year.

The federal government owns the property.

Consultants will be hired and the first public meeting is expected before the summer.

Student Bus Passes

High School Students in Kingston will continue to get free bus passes.

City council has approved extending the program for another three years.

The Limestone District School Board and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Board provide $60,000 a year towards the program.

CAS

The executive director of Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington calls it an historic achievement in the organizations 121 years.

Steven Woodman says the agency has reduced the number of kids in care from 500 in 2006 to 300 today.

Woodman says the milestone was achieved by following a strategic plan that to deliver better services and strategies to keep families in crisis together.

Dental Week Project

A Kingston man is getting support from city council for a unique project to help people get much needed dental work.  David Knowles is raising $10,000 for the Dental Week Project.

Last night city council agreed to match the funds raised by Knowles.

He plans to book a dentist for a week to provide dental care to people on low or fixed incomes.

The program will be administered through the Kingston Community Health Centres.

LCVI Road Race

The 37th annual LCVI Road Race takes place today.

Hundreds of Limestone District School Board students in grades 3 to 8 will compete in six races today.

The first race starts at 11 this morning and the last race is scheduled to leave LCVI at 12:50 this afternoon.

The students will be running through the Calvin Park neighbourhood.

McHappy Day

McDonald’s in Kingston will be donating proceeds of McHappy Day to Ronald McDonald House, the Boys and Girls Club and Pathways to Education.

A dollar from the sales of Big Macs, Happy Meals and hot beverages will be donated to the organizations today.
