Crash – Traffic Gridlock

The province’s police watchdog is investigating a three vehicle crash that closed the 401 eastbound and created traffic gridlock in downtown Kingston and on Highway 2 east of Kingston.  One of the vehicles was an OPP cruiser and the drivers of the other two vehicles suffered serious injuries.

The crash took place on the eastbound 401 near Joyceville Road at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday.

The drivers were all taken to hospital – the OPP officer from the Leeds detachment for observation…the other drivers…a 78 year old man and a 43 year old man suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

There was a separate crash on the eastbound 401 about an hour after the original crash that resulted in injuries to a woman.

Traffic was detoured off the 401 at Joyceville Road and the eastbound 401 didn’t re-open to traffic until after 9:00 p.m. Thursday.

Fire Marshall – Napanee Fire

The cause of a fire that destroyed a vacant home in Greater Napanee is under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshall.  The home at the corner of Highway 33 and Apsley Road had been vacant for a long period of time.  Officials say they’re suspicious about what caused the fire.  The fire left only a brick chimney standing at the house.

CFB Kingston – New Commander

The new commander of CFB Kingston says he couldn’t be happier to be in command of a fantastic team in a fantastic city. Colonel Andrew Jayne took command from Brigadier General Steve Kelsey during a ceremony at Thompson Drill Hall yesterday afternoon.  The new base commander graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston in 1991.

Seatbelt Survey

Just under 3% of drivers and passengers in Kingston weren’t wearing seatbelts during a survey conducted at two busy intersections.  Kingston Partners for a Safe Community checked 3,530 drivers and passengers yesterday and found 96 weren’t wearing seatbelts.  A news release says people are risking their lives by not taking the three seconds needed to put on their seatbelt.

United Way

One of the most powerful thing about the United Way Campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is the commitment of volunteers to the cause.  That will be more than noticeable today in Kingston when Empire Life hosts a BBQ in their back parking lot as part of their campaign.  The City of Kingston is hosting a bake sale and pie eating contest in Springer Market Square starting at noon and Providence Care hosts its annual cake auction at two locations…St. Mary’s and its Mental Health Services site.
