Dylan – Nobel Prize

Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

In making the announcement today in Stockholm, the Nobel committee cited the legendary American singer-songwriter “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

Hydro Outage

A lengthy power failure caused lots of frustration for just over a hundred Hydro One customers in the Cataraqui Woods area.  Power went out around seven last night and was off for about five hours while Hydro One fixed a problem described as wires arcing at Pinewood and Cedarwood.

Impaired Driver – Jail Term

An impaired driver who wound up going airborne and landing in the backyard of a home in Kingston’s west end is going to jail for six months.  35 year old Shane Hollet has also been prohibited from driving for two years.

The Kingston man had more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood when his pickup veered off Taylor Kidd Boulevard – went airborne and landed next to a children’s play set back in April.  It was his second conviction for impaired driving.

Trio Busted

Three Kingston men face charges after a garage and trailer were broken into on McIvor Road near Sunnyside Road.  A 49 year old and a 53 year old were arrested at a nearby residence.  Two bags of tools, a tool box and stolen bicycle were recovered.  The 53 year old has been charged with break and enter and possession of stolen property and the 49 year old is charged with possession of stolen property.  A 30 year old man was arrested at the Kingston bus station trying to leave the city. He’s charged with theft, two counts of possession of stolen property and two counts of breach of probation.  Police say he was in possession of a stolen iPad and a woman’s wallet.

Wynne – School Announcement

Some special guests were scheduled to make an announcement at 8:45 this morning at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School on Woodbine Road.

Premier Kathleen Wynne, Education Minister Mitzie Hunter and Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala will be making that announcement this morning.

Women – Best Cities

Kingston is ranked as the second best city in Canada to live in if you are a woman.

A study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives ranked Victoria first…Windsor, Ontario was rated last among the country’s 25 largest metropolitan areas. The Centre ranked the cities based on gaps in men and women’s access to economic security, personal security, education, health, and positions of leadership.

Pop Up Country

Country music invades downtown Kingston tonight with two concerts and a promotion called Pop-Up Country Kingston.  Doc Walker is performing at the Grand Theatre and Kip Moore is at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.  Following the concerts free bracelets will be distributed for admission to venues in the downtown where popular local country musicians will be performing.
