Chamber – Tourism

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce and Ontario Chamber have released a report on tourism saying there is a significant opportunity to grow tourism in the province.

The report says international visitors would have spent $16 billion more between 2006 and 2012 if Ontario had kept pace with global tourism growth.  It’s recommending the province adopt a government wide tourism strategy with measurable targets.  The province will release its Strategic Framework for Tourism later this year.

Trenton Robbery – Linked to K-Town

Police say a man wanted for robbing the Royal Bank in Trenton on Tuesday is also the suspect in bank robberies in Kingston and Richmond Hill in late August….in Napanee on September 29th and Oshawa on October 15th.  The suspect is described as a heavy-set male with dark hair and a beard.  He was wearing a Toronto Blue Jays cap and dark clothing.

Rescue – Conservation Area

A real life scare for a cyclists and a test for rescuers at the McCauley Mountain Conservation area in Prince Edward County.  The 53 year old man from Belleville suffered serious injuries when he fell off his bike on a trail and slid down a steep embankment on Tuesday.  He was there for several hours before a hiker hear his calls for help.  Emergency services used ropes and rescue basket to lift the man 40 metres up a steep slope and carry him to a waiting ambulance on Clarke Road.

Operation Red Nose

Operation Red Nose is returning to Kingston for its 19th season.

The designated driver program will operate on Friday and Saturday nights starting next weekend.

The service is free but donations are accepted and this year people hosting home or corporate parties can make a donation and provide guests with a ride voucher.

Salvation Army – Red Kettle Campaign

The Salvation Army will be launching its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign tomorrow at noon in the centre court at the Cataraqui Centre.

The goal for this year is $290,000.

The Campaign helps families and individuals with food, clothing, toys and shelter.

British Whig Building

Crews will be working on the British Whig Building in downtown Kingston starting today.  The sidewalk in front of the building will be closed to pedestrian while repairs are being made to the buildings masonry.

Walk through scaffolding will give pedestrians access to the building but the sidewalk will be closed between 7:30am to 4pm will crews complete the work.
