Kingston Budget Approved

Property taxes will be going up by 2.5% next year after Kingston city council has approved the 2017 budget. Council passed the budget last night after hearing from various departments and agencies.  Budget deliberations began on Monday.

The 2.5% tax hike translates into an extra $82 a year on the average home.

The operating budget for 2017 will be $349 million dollars and the capital budget will be $43 million.

Town Crier – Vehicle Found

Kingston’s Town Crier has his vehicle back thanks to some help from folks on social media.

His red 2013 Ford Escape with the vanity plate…TCRIER…was stolen from in front of his workplace at the Visitor Bureau on Ontario Street yesterday.

A tip on Twitter led Wyman to his vehicle in Amherstview last night.  His town crier jacket was still inside.  The OPP is investigating and so far nobody has been arrested.

Trailer Recovered

A trailer stolen from a business in the Bayridge area of Kingston has been found in Enterprise.

The trailer belonging to BDK Foam Insulation was taken from 780 Burnett Street on Saturday.

It was recovered by Napanee OPP in Enterprise at around 11am yesterday.  So far, no arrests have been made.

Jeep Hits Play Structure

Kingston Police say a man has come forward after it posted details about a Jeep hitting a play structure in Elder Park on Alamein Drive.

Police say a Jeep travelling west on Mack Street around 9:10 Monday night ran two stop signs before jumping the curb and hitting the children’s play structure.

A man went to police headquarters yesterday shortly after police posted the details on social media.

United Way Campaign

The United Way Campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has reached the $3 million mark.

The campaign thermometer sits at 89% of the goal of $3,451,000 this morning.  There’s a week to go before the campaign wraps up.

CFB Kingston held its Touch Down Breakfast this morning in the Warrant Officer’s and Sergeant’s Mess.

K3C is raising funds with a Comedy Night tonight at Absolute Comedy.

Teachers Wins Award

A Kingston high school teacher has won the Meritorious Service Medal from Governor General David Johnston.

Chris Alfanso of LaSalle Secondary School has been recognized for outstanding accomplishments and setting an example for others to follow.
