WEAPONS CHARGES
A 32-year-old Kingston man with previous weapons charges is facing additional charges after he  attempted to flee from police. Kingston police were able to locate the man using a GPS ankle-bracelet monitor and found him to be in possession of an Airsoft pistol and drugs. The accused charges date back to previous incidents between 2009 and 2013 when he also had weapons charges.  New charges against the accused include four counts of weapons possession while prohibited, drug possession and resisting arrest.

TRENTON MAN SENTENCED
A Trenton man convicted in the stabbing death of his estranged girlfriend is heading to a federal prison.  Ronald Shorey was handed a 13 year sentence yesterday for the 2012 killing of Cindy Sullivan. Her body was discovered in the bedroom of her boyfriend’s apartment. She had been beaten and stabbed in the neck and chest with a kitchen knife. Ronald Shorey was found guilty of manslaughter last month.

BROCKVILLE COLLISION
A Brockville woman is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after a head on collision Wednesday afternoon. A car traveling eastbound slid into the path of an oncoming car. Slippery roads played a part in the collision. The driver of the westbound vehicle was not injured. No charges have been laid.

FRONTENACS JERSEYS
In honour of The Tragically Hip’s roots in the community, and as a way of helping to raise funds for the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer, the Kingston Frontenacs will be wearing special jerseys at their home game on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Rogers K-Rock Centre  The announcement came yesterday morning. The Kingston Frontenacs game-worn jerseys honouring The Tragically Hip will be auctioned online. Full details on the auction site will be released the week prior to the game.and will auction the jerseys after the game with the net proceeds donated to the fund.

MAN FACES 17 CHARGES
A 22-year-old Kingston man is facing a total of 17 charges in relation to domestic abuse against his female partner and her children. January 4th the female victim visited police headquarters where she reported the abuse. This included him striking her children and also assaulting her on multiple occasions, once with a metal broom handle. The accused also refused to allow the victim to leave the residence a number of times when she attempted to end the relationship. He is additionally alleged to have threatened to kill her more than once if she tried to leave him. Charges include 9 counts of Assault, Assault with a weapon, Uttering threats and Forcible confinement.

SANDY PINES DISTEMPER
Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre has been receiving many calls each week from Kingston and surrounding area in regards to Raccoons seen behaving abnormally. Calls have described the suffering animals as having seizures, falling from trees, unable to climb or walk normally, out in the daytime, exposed and not finding shelter in cold weather. They are signs of distemper, a highly contagious disease, which can be passed to unvaccinated dogs. Dog owners should ensure their pet’s vaccination status is up to date. Several wild species can be effected, most notably raccoons, but also foxes and skunks.

OPIOIDS HASTINGS/PEC
Rates of Opioid related addiction and deaths are soaring across Canada, and it’s reached  the Quinte region in large numbers.  Hastings and Prince Edward County now ranks in the top third in Ontario for the number of prescriptions for drugs such as oxycontin, morphine or fentanyl.  So fare there have been 10 opioid-related deaths in Hastings County, and 5 fatalities in Prince Edward County. The pain based medications are highly addictive and have become a popular recreational drug.
