Trudeau – Tour

Nearly 800 people showed up for the Kingston Town Hall meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.  Trudeau was put on the spot over the Phoenix pay controversy by a correctional officer who said he’s been told it could take up to three years to fix the system….Trudeau took responsibility for the problems and said the government is committed to fixing the system.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is demanding the government establish a separate pay system for workers shortchanged by the ongoing problems.

Trudeau continues his cross-country tour today, making his way through southern Ontario from C-F-B Trenton to London.  Along the way, he’ll visit a restaurant in Bewdley and hold a town hall in Peterborough, before meeting youth from Saskatchewan at the Toronto Raptors practice facility.

MPS Office Vandalized

Kingston Police have released photographs of two suspects after the office of Kingston and the Island M-P Mark Gerretsen was vandalized. Red paint was thrown on the doors and windows of the Princess Street office sometime late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.  Anyone with information about the suspects is being asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Guilty – Sexual Assault

A 40 year old Kingston man will be sentenced in March for sexually assaulting a forcibly confining a woman in a shed on Wolfe Island.

The 35 year old woman had met Michael Ross Burnett at the Ryandale Shelter.  The next day they went to Wolfe Island to spend the day and wait for the shelter to re-open.

Burnett repeatedly punched the woman in the face…sexually assaulted her and held her a shed for two days in December of 2015.

Traffic Stop – Arrests

A traffic stop for throwing a cigarette butt out a car window has resulted in charges against two Kingston men.

Kingston Police stopped the car on Division Street near Stephen Street on Wednesday night after spotting a young woman toss a cigarette out the window.  That’s considered to be littering.

The traffic stop resulted in the 19 year old Kingston man who was driving the car being charged with driving while suspended and driving without insurance.  A 23 year old Kingston man – who was a passenger – was charged with breaching conditions from a previous run in with police that banned him from drinking alcohol.

Marijuana Assault

Kingston police say the last of three people accused in the New Year’s missing marijuana assault case.

A man was assaulted by three people who believed he had stolen their pot at a New Year’s Eve party.  His vehicle was also damaged.  Two men were arrested on January 3rd and the final suspect was arrested at his workplace on Wednesday.

The trio of 21 year olds have been charged with assault causing bodily harm, mischief and uttering threats.

Electronic Waste – Drop off

If you’ve got some old electronics you need to get rid of…LaSalle Secondary School is holding an e-waste collection on the front lawn of the school from 9am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday.  It’s in support of a student trip to Nicaragua in the spring.

Youth Programs and Camps Expo

You can find out about Youth Programs and Camps being offered at Queen’s University during a special expo tomorrow in Grant Hall.  Over 30 exhibitors will be on hand with information and signup opportunities for over 250 programs for youth aged four to 18.

The Expo takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
