Vimy Ceremonies

Hundreds of people…many of them soldiers…gathered at the Great War Memorial in Kingston’s City Park on Sunday for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

The battle is seen as a coming of age for Canada.

The memorial carries the names of the battles where Kingston’s 21st Battalion fought…including Vimy Ridge.

Mayor Bryan Paterson said the pride of what was accomplished at Vimy Ridge carries on in the hearts of the men and women of the military community in Kingston today.

In France…the commemorative ceremony was held in front of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.  High school students from Kingston and Napanee were there as Prince Charles spoke on behalf of the Queen.

Empty boots were placed on the Memorial to represent the 3,598 soldiers that died at Vimy.
