College Students Withdraw

There has been no increase in the number of students dropping out of St. Lawrence College following the five week strike by faculty.

The college says about 400 students at its campuses in Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall have dropped out…exactly the same number as last year.  Students who withdraw by today are eligible for a refund of their tuition due to the five week strike by faculty.

Bicycle Lanes

The Kingston area will see more bike lanes in the future thanks to $93 million dollars in funding for 120 municipalities in Ontario this year.

Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca says the funding comes from Ontario’s cap-and-trade program.

Kingston is getting more than $1,335,000.

Frontenac County will receive just over $120,000.

South Frontenac is getting almost $81,000.

Gananoque will get $25,000.

Eating Pizza – Busted!

It turns out the vehicle a police officer in Kingston stopped on Saturday night wasn’t being driven by somebody who had been drinking alcohol…even though it was weaving all over Division Street.

The driver was eating pizza and was obviously having trouble eating and driving.

The officer searched the vehicle and found two bags of crystal methamphetamine.  A 40-year-old man from Belleville and a 32-year-old man from Picton both face charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Wheels Gone

The OPP says nobody was injured when a transport truck lost two tires early this morning on the 401 in Brockville.

Leeds OPP says the transport failed to remain at the scene.  It caused significant damage on the 401 westbound near Stewart Boulevard in Brockville around 12:50 this morning.

Elected officials, former site managers and employees will join management at the Invista Site on Front Road today to mark the anniversary.

A commemorative plaque will be unveiled.

Invista started out as the DuPont nylon plant in 1942.

It was Canada’s first nylon plant and the second one in the world.

The site continues to manufacture nylon products for use in clothing, carpet, air bags, and more.

Zaun Apology

Four days after he was let go for what the company called inappropriate behaviour and comments, former Sportsnet broadcaster Gregg Zaun has issued an apology.  In a statement issued by his lawyer yesterday, Zaun apologized for “any harm or distress” to his female colleagues and says he “naively” believed his language was not offensive.
