Military Judge – Charges

 

Canada’s military police have taken the unprecedented step of charging the Armed Forces’ highest-ranking judge.  Colonel Mario Dutil has been charged with committing an act of a fraudulent nature, willfully making a false entry in an official document, and conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline.  Military police began investigating Dutil in November 2015 after receiving a complaint that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate and knowingly signed a travel claim containing false information.

 

Fatal Crash

 

The OPP has released the name of the man who died in a single vehicle crash on the 401 eastbound about 2 kilometres east of Joyceville Road on Wednesday afternoon.

72 year old Victor Brennon of Lansdowne died when his vehicle suddenly veered off the road and entered the ditch.  The highway was closed for about six hours while police investigated the crash.

 

Standoff Arrest – Update

 

Kingston Police have released some of the details of a standoff on Glen Cairn Terrace Wednesday morning.

They say an 18 year old had returned to the home around 3:30 Wednesday morning and began smashing things with a hockey stick.  Police say he shoved his mother and hit his stepfather in the side of the head with the stick before firing a crossbow bolt into a wall.

He then threatened to slit their throats with a knife.

He surrendered to police around 9:30 Wednesday morning.

 

Patrick Brown – Update

 

A new interim leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative party will be named today following the resignation of Patrick Brown.   The former leader stepped aside yesterday, after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced.  Party officials have not said yet whether a new leader will be chosen or whether the interim leader will take the reins and steer the party into the June 7th Ontario election.

 

Milliken – Habitat Ambassador

 

Former Kingston and the Islands Liberal MP and Speaker of the House of Commons, Peter Milliken has been named as the Community Ambassador for Habitat for Humanity Kingston Limestone Region.

The organization says Milliken will be representing Habitat Kingston at numerous events to further awareness of how communities can come together to support local working families.

 

Community Builder Award

 

Retired Brigadier General Bill Richard will receive the first Community Builder Award from the Community Foundation of Kingston and Area at a special luncheon today.

Richard is being recognized for his many volunteer roles as a shining example of the impact one individual can have on the community.

The Community Foundation is also moving into its new office space at 275 Ontario Street today.

An Open House is being planned for February 14th.

 

Film Festival

 

The Kingston Canadian Film Festival will reveal the titles that have been selected for the festival on Sunday.

The Launch Party will take place from 2-4pm at Tango Nuevo.

The public is invited and festival organizers say it is an opportunity for people to explore all of the titles before single tickets go on sale at 10am on Monday.

 

Kingston Author – Movie Deal

 

It’s big news in the entertainment world with a Kingston connection.  Academy award winning filmmaker Charlie Kaufman will be turning a book written by Kingston author Iain Reid into a movie.

Reid has signed the deal to have the book…I’m Thinking of Ending Things…become a feature film on Netflix.

No dates have been set yet for when the movie will be shot or released.
