Prison Farms – Plant Based

 

A Kingston based group says prison farms shouldn’t be involved in killing animals or other traditional farming like egg and dairy production.

Evolve Our Prison Farms says animal agriculture is deeply problematic for the environment, human health and is counterproductive to the rehabilitation of inmates.

It says the farms at Collins Bay and Joyceville Institutions should concentrate on plant based agriculture and become a sanctuary for farmed animals.

The federal budget has committed $4.3 million dollars to re-open the two farms in Kingston.

 

Harassment

 

A 31 year old Kingston man has been charged with harassing his ex for almost six months.

Kingston Police say the couple had separated in September of last year and has repeatedly refused to leave her alone.  Police say the man showed up at her apartment building at 1:45 in the morning on February 19th…pulled a knife and threatened the woman.

The man was arrested at 3:45 a.m. on March 1 and has been charged with uttering death threats, possession of a dangerous weapon and harassment.

 

Stolen Goods – Wolfe Island

 

The OPP is looking for the owners of stolen property from Wolfe Island.

Police have recovered items stolen from the Island in January.  They include tools for wood cutting, work clothing and a weather measuring instrument.

Anyone on Wolfe Island who has been a recent victim of a property theft should contact Leeds OPP.

 

NDP – Horwath

 

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is in Kingston to help promote her party’s local candidate for the upcoming Ontario election.

The Kingston and the Islands NDP riding association met last night in Memorial Hall and chose Ian Arthur is its candidate for Ontario’s election on June 7th.

Horwath and Arthur will attend a news conference at Kingston General Hospital this morning.

 

PC Leadership Voting

 

Online voting begins today in the race to pick a leader for Ontario’s Progressive Conservative party. The leadership campaign began after Patrick Brown resigned last month amid sexual misconduct allegations.  Voting is set to take place until Thursday, with the results announced on March 10.

The winner will lead the party for the Ontario election on June 7th.

 

 

Art Conservation

 

The Art Conservation Program at Queen’s will be developing new course material focusing on Indigenous issues, Indigenous cultural materials and new media,

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has given the program a grant of $632,000 over five years.

Queen’s says the funding will help advance its goals of diversity, equity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The Memorial Centre Farmers Market is moving back to the barns at the Memorial Centre.

Operations Manager Emma Barken says the move had been scheduled for May but hey will be re-locating from Princess Street United Church to the Memorial Centre this Sunday.  Barken says the move will provide more space for an additional 10 small businesses to sell their goods.
