National Recording Registry Says These Songs Are Worthy Of Preservation

The National Recording Registry has named 25 recordings to be honored for their cultural, historic and aesthetic importance to the American soundscape.

The named works range from spoken-word and musical recordings spanning the years 1911 to 1996 and include recordings like Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album “Rumours”; Kenny Loggins’ 1984 hit “Footloose”; the disco track “Le Freak” by Chic from 1978; and Kenny Rogers’ 1978 single “The Gambler”.

The 25 additions will put the total number of titles on the registry to 500.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden named the class of 2017 saying, “…each year is an opportunity for reflection on landmark moments, diverse cultures and shared memories—all reflected in our recorded soundscape.”
