Windstorm – Damage – Power Outages

There were still several thousand people in Kingston and the Kingston area who didn’t have electricity this morning after strong winds took down trees, tree branches and ripped the roof of an apartment building in Kingston.

There were over thirty separate power outages this morning in the area from Napanee to Gananoque and North to Sharbot Lake.  Several of the outages were in Kingston West and one in Kingston East.

Hydro One says it is hoping to have power restored for those customers by late this afternoon.

Frontenac Secondary School and Module de l’Acadie in Kingston and Southview Public School in Napanee were both closed today because they don’t have electricity.

The residents of an apartment building at 385 Division Street were evacuated yesterday afternoon.  80 people and their pets were accommodated on Kingston Transit buses.  Those who didn’t have anywhere else to stay were taken to a hotel last night.  There was also damage to an apartment building roof on Queen Mary Road and several glass panels from balconies on a downtown high rise blew off.  No injuries have been reported.

City crews worked to clear up downed trees and tree branches and fix street lights that were damaged in the wind.

St. Lawrence College cancelled classes last night and ferry service in the area was temporarily put on hold due to the strong winds.  The ferries were operating this morning and St. Lawrence College is also operating on its normal schedule.
