Injection Drug Site

The Street Health Centre on Barrack Street in Kingston is setting up a supervised drug injection site aimed at preventing opioid overdoses.  Officials say between January and October of 2017…22 people died in Kingston from opioid related overdoses.

The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care is providing funding of $130,000 for the six month pilot project.

The site will provide space for drug users to inject or consume drugs with medical oversight at the facility led by a paramedic.

The supervised drug use site is a partnership between Frontenac Paramedic Services, Street Health, KFL&A Public Health and HIV/AIDS Regional Services.

Gord Brown Funeral

The House of Commons has changed its schedule for today to allow for Members of Parliament and staff to travel to Gananoque for the funeral of Gord Brown.  The 57 year old MP for Leeds-Grenville, Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes died last Wednesday in his Parliament Hill office. Brown’s funeral starts at 11 this morning at the Lou Jeffries Recreation Centre in Gananoque.

Hiding in Trunk

A 39 year old Kingston man found hiding in the trunk of a car during a traffic stop faces charges of resisting arrest possession of prohibited weapons and drug possession.

Police stopped a vehicle on Sunday night on Montreal Street and say the man in the trunk tried to flee.

A search of his back pack turned up a large amount of money, various weapons along with heroin and crack cocaine.

Three Legged Dog – Bread Knife

A 39-year-old Kingston man is facing charges after a three legged dog was stolen during a break in at the Kingston Humane Society.

Police found a man hiding in an outer building, with the missing dog in a garbage bag on his lap.  Police say he got agitated and pulled out a bread knife…but dropped it and now faces charges of  break and enter, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Stolen Necklace – Child’s Ashes

Kingston Police are appealing for the public’s help after a woman’s necklace containing the ashes of her daughter was taken.  Investigators say the necklace with a small gold heart shaped container was stolen during a break and enter, and its recovery is a priority.  They say anyone who locates the necklace can return it anonymously to police headquarters.

Heritage Fair

The 2018 version of the Kingston Regional Heritage Fair takes place today at McArthur Hall.

Students will be showing off their research projects and attending a variety of workshops.

Volunteer adjudicators judge the project and the awards ceremony takes place at 2:45 this afternoon.

Three students will be chosen to attend the Ontario Provincial Fair in Toronto next month.

Vinyl Sale

If you love your music on vinyl…there’s a popular sale kicking off today in Kingston.

The Kingston Symphony’s Vinyl Records Sale opens at 4pm and runs until Sunday.  It’s being held at the Symphony’s Warehouse at 785 Sir. John A. Macdonald Boulevard.

On top of the vinyl there’s also thousands of CD’s and DVD’s along with a wide variety of stereo equipment for sale.

Proceeds support the work of the Kingston Symphony and provide financial awards to youth studying music in Kingston and the surrounding region.

Turtles – Drivers – Holding Station

Turtles Kingston has launched a program to transport injured or dead turtles to temporary holding stations in Kingston and Amherstview.

The program allows people to take them to Kingston Veterinary Clinic, Cataraqui Pet Hospital or Amherstview Pet Hospital.  Turtles Kingston says it hopes to have four additional locations in the near future.

The vets have agreed to keep the turtles until they can be transported to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee.
