Kingston – Green Grant

The City of Kingston is getting $1.7 million from the Greenhouse Gas Challenge Fund.  The money will be used for the new Public Works energy-efficient fleet maintenance garage.

A news release says the funding from the Ontario government will help cover the cost of a special heat recovery system, LED lighting, geothermal heating system and rooftop solar panels to create close to net-zero carbon emission targets.

Election Campaign

Ontario Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne will be making a campaign stop in Kingston this afternoon as she travels the province in her bid to get re-elected.

Wynne is starting hear day in Ottawa and will visit the Innovation Hub at St. Lawrence College in Kingston at 3:45 this afternoon.

Apprenticeships – Election

The President of St. Lawrence College is making apprenticeships an election issue.  Glen Vollebregt says getting an apprenticeship should be much easier than it is.  Vollebregt says college student should be able to apply for apprenticeships in the same way they apply for a college program.  Currently students have to try and find an apprenticeship on their own and many have found it impossible to get one.

Vollebregt says more apprenticeships are needed to produce qualified tradespeople to meet a large demand.

Chamber – election luncheon

The five candidates running in the riding of Kingston and the Islands will be speaking at a luncheon today sponsored by the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce.  The Chamber says the session at the Delta Kingston Waterfront Hotel will provide an opportunity for the candidates to explain their platforms.  Chamber members will also be able to ask them questions.

Westport – Submerged Vehicle Update

A woman who drove her vehicle off a boat ramp into Upper Rideau Lake just outside of Westport has died in hospital.  57 year old Wendy Holmes of Rideau Lakes Township passed away in Kingston General Hospital on Tuesday.  Holmes was found inside her fully submerged vehicle around midnight on Friday after the OPP was notified she had just driven off the boat ramp on Forrester’s Landing Drive.  A news release says alcohol was a factor.  Holmes was brought to shore by an OPP officer and volunteer firefighter and rushed to Kingston General in critical condition.

Horses Running Loose

A 70 year old woman from Tyendinaga Township has been charged with mischief after numerous complaints about horses running loose in the Blessington and Weese Roads area.

The problem has been ongoing for several years.

Napanee OPP, the OSPCA and Tyendinaga Township executed a search warrant at Charlotte Bright’s home on Tuesday.

Police say once all of the horses have been rounded up they will be kept away from the property until it can be properly fenced to contain them.

Sandy Pines – Fundraising Results

The Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre is thanking people after a successful Wildlife Baby Shower fund raising event on the weekend.

Sandy Pines says there were approximately a thousand people who visited the animal rescue shelter and the event raised about $20,000 dollars.  The funds will help with caring for the wildlife and rebuilding the barn that was destroyed by fire last year.

Police – Youth Leadership Camp

A new summer camp in Kingston will provide an opportunity for young people to learn about the justice system.  Kingston Police, The Faculty of Law at Queen’s, the Boys and Girls Club and the City of Kingston are teaming up to offer The Law and Leadership Summer Camp.

Kingston Police has received a grant of $82,320 for the two-year project.

A week of free summer camp will be provide for 400 youth from nine to 12 year olds at The Rideau Heights Community Centre.
