Bernardo – Court Appearance

Notorious killer and serial rapist Paul Bernardo is scheduled for his trial in Napanee today on a weapons possession.

He was charged after a shank…consisting of a screw with a pen handle was seized at the maximum-security Millhaven Institution in February. The 54-year-old Bernardo had said he wanted to get the trial done before a parole hearing scheduled for later this month.

 

Collins Bay Lockdown – Max Security

A lockdown is in place in the maximum security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

The Correctional Service issued a news release yesterday saying the lockdown started at 9am on Thursday to enable staff members to conduct an exceptional search.

Visitors who have already planned a visit are being asked to contact the Collins Bay Institution directly.

 

Child Pornography

Kingston Police have charged a 30 year old Kingston man with making child pornography available, possessing child pornography and accessing child pornography.

Police say their investigation started in January and they were able to get judicial authorization in July to identify the subscriber of an internet service.  That led them to an address in Kingston.

Police executed a search warrant at a residence on Wednesday.  They seized digital devices and storage media and arrested the man.

 

Student Walkout

Students at Ecole Secondaire Marie Rivier School in Kingston are planning a rally today to protest the Ontario government’s changes to the sex education curriculum.

The rally will take place at the French language Catholic school this afternoon at 2:30.

An e-mail message from a student organizer says the rally is to show their displeasure with the idea of Premier Doug Ford’s changes.

 

Wildlife Centre – Barn Building Help

The Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee is asking for help from a contractor who is experience in the construction of barns.  Construction to replace a barn destroyed by fire started this summer – but the contractor suffered a devastating accident.  The wildlife centre says plumbing, electrical, flooring, insulation and carpentry on the interior of the barn won’t be finished in time for this winter.

The Wildlife Centre has put out a call for a contractor with barn or agricultural building experience to take over the work.

 

Downburst – Central Frontenac

Central Frontenac Township has announced the Canadian Red Cross will provide support to people devastated by a downburst that destroyed homes and property in the Sharbot Lake Area.

The Red Cross is providing financial aid to some of the most vulnerable people impacted by the storm on September 21st.  The Red Cross is encouraging anyone impacted by the downburst to register with them by calling their 1-800 number.

Solar Car

Polytechnique Montréal’s solar car will make a stop in Kingston tomorrow on an 800 kilometre weekend cruise with a power plant equivalent to a hair dryer.

The car named Esteban 9 was the first place finisher at the international Formula Sun Grand Prix this summer in Hastings, Nebraska.

The solar car will leave Cornwall tomorrow morning and is scheduled to arrive at Fort Henry in Kingston at 11:45 where it will be on display for an hour before leaving for Peterborough.
