Ice Fishing – Rescue

Two men were rescued from the Bay of Quinte in Prince Edward County after going through the ice.

The men were ice fishing yesterday when they went through the ice shortly after six last night.  They were about a kilometre from Big Island.  Other people who were ice fishing rescued the men.  They were treated at the scene by paramedics.

 

Protests – Vandalism

Members of Kingston’s Indigenous Community and Idle No More held a demonstration in downtown Kingston on Saturday in support of protesters arrested in British Columbia last week.

The group of about 150 people gathered in Confederation Park and disrupted traffic at Princess and King Streets and along Ontario Street near the Wolfe Island Ferry Dock.

 

The Spirit of Sir John A. train engine in Confederation Park was vandalized sometime Friday night or early Saturday.  The words…”when justice fails block the rails” and #shutdownCanada were spray painted in blue along the bottom portion of the engine.

 

Pot Shop Lottery

There’s no word yet on whether one of the five pot shop lottery winners for Eastern Ontario will be setting up a retail cannabis outlet in Kingston.  The Alcohol and Gaming Commission has released the names of the 25 winners in Ontario.  The five winners in the east region are Daniel Telio, Brandon Long, Patterson and Lavoie, PURE ALPHA HOLDINGS, and Karan Someshwar.

Winners in each region can choose to apply for a shop licence.  Kingston city council has voted in favour of allowing the stores.  The winners have to submit a $50,000 Standby Letter of Credit, submit a Retail Operator Licence Application and make a non-refundable $6,000 fee payment by the end of business day on Friday, January 18, 2019.

Lottery Scam

Napanee OPP are investigating a lottery scam fraud involving a 72 year old woman in Loyalist Township who was contacted on Facebook.

Police say the woman didn’t realize her friend’s account had been hacked.  She was told her name was on a lottery website and she had won a prize.  She was asked to pay a large amount of money to get the prize.  Investigators say she eventually reported the scam to police.

 

Election Expenses

The Liberal, Conservative and NDP candidates in Kingston and the Islands who ran in the Ontario election last year each spent over $100,000 on their campaign.  Elections Ontario has released the campaign expenses for the provincial election.  Liberal Sophie Kiwala spent just over $116,000 dollar in a losing bid to be re-elected.  NDP candidate Ian Arthur spent almost $113,000 on his winning campaign.  PC candidate Gary Bennett invested just over $103,000 on his campaign.

 

Ignition Week

It’s Ignition Week at Queen’s! Five days of activities for the university and Kingston community members interested in entrepreneurship and innovation.

The Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre is celebrating the opening of its Rose Innovation Hub at Mitchell Hall.

Ignition Week features sessions on e-commerce, innovation and invention, social entrepreneurship, and more. Established entrepreneurs, including many from start-ups founded by past and present Queen’s students, will be on hand for lectures, panel discussions, networking and recruitment sessions.

 

Leo is Back

A couple who has been reunited with their dog after it took off from the Thousand Islands Dog Resort on New Year’s Eve.  Leo was the subject of a search by volunteers over the past two weeks…but it was Lost Paws…a non-profit organization from Kitchener that found Leo in an abandoned barn near the kennel he escaped from on Saturday morning.
