COVID – Numbers

The latest news from KFL&A Public Health posted Sunday afternoon says there are still just four confirmed cases of COVID 19 in the region.

There are 1,472 confirmed and presumptive cases in Canada.

425 of the confirmed cases are in Ontario.

Twenty-one people have now died from COVID-19 in Canada.

COVID – Social Distancing

Federal Health Minister Patty Hajdu is repeating her strong words about the consequences people will face if Canadians don’t follow the directives of health authorities about staying at home and socially distancing.

Hajdu says there are powers she can invoke under the Quarantine Act to levy fines or even criminal charges against people defying self-isolation orders.

Return from Vacation

The big concern now is with people who have returned to Canada from outside the country.

KFL&A Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Kieran Moore, says those people need to self-isolate for 14 days.

He says that means…do not go to public places such as work, grocery stores, shopping centres, or pharmacies…          ask someone to get food and other necessities for you and leave them at your front door…do not have visitors and if you need medical attention…wear a mask when you go out.

City – Homeless

The city of Kingston is trying to provide for the homeless during this pandemic.

The Kingston Youth shelter is moving from 234 Brock St. to 113 Lower Union St. to provide more space for social distancing.  It is also looking for a second location to provide space for self-isolation.

The city is also installing portable toilets at Belle Park and Artillery Park and is working with providers of meal programs to ensure a supply of food.

Front Door Sign

The City and KFL&A Public Health have developed a poster for residents who are self-isolating at home.

You can print and post it on the door to your home and if you don’t have a printer you can make your own sign.

The sign says:

STOP

Due to COVID-19, we’re currently not answering our door. If you’re a friend or family member, please reach out to us by phone, text, email or through social media.

Food Delivery

Amidst all of the gloom and doom…there are some good things happening.

Four farms in eastern Ontario have partnered to offer food delivery in the Kingston, Belleville and Tweed area.

Enright Cattle and Drain Poultry in Tweed along with Patchwork Gardens in Battersea and Kendall Hills Farms in Clarington are delivering beef, eggs and vegetables.

Details are available at: www.enrightcattlecompany.com

Medical Masks

The owner of Town and Country Painting and Construction is donating approximately 1,000 N95 face masks to the Kingston Health Sciences Centre. Jack Moussaoui delivered the masks on Saturday to a neighbour who is an emergency room doctor at Kingston General Hospital.

He’s also asking other businesses who may have a supply of the masks to donate them to health care workers.

Local Legends

K-Rock is asking you to help recognize people who are doing good deeds or just helping lift spirits in the community.

It could be the front-line staff helping you get groceries, or those important people working in Hospitals. Maybe its just your neighbor taking your garbage out for you.

You can nominate a local legend by going to the “Latest ” section on the K-Rock website.
