Fatal Crash

 

One person is dead after a head on collision on County Road 2 in Odessa.

The crash involving three vehicle took place just after noon yesterday.

One driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  Another driver was taken to hospital.  The third driver wasn’t hurt.

County road 2 was closed between Fairbanks Street and Neil Rd while police investigated the crash but has since been re-opened.

 

Sex Offender – Back Behind Bars

 

A sex offender living in Kingston is back in prison after the parole board ruled he has violated his long term supervision order.

Kingston Police had warned the community last November that Lucas Petrini would be living and working in Kingston.

The 28 year old convict is now facing a charge of breaching conditions of his supervision order by snorting medication used by a fellow parolee, regularly consumed marijuana in the form of shatter and purchasing an i-Phone that could access the Internet.

The parole board has suspended his long term supervision order and he is now back in prison awaiting trial and could face up to 10 years in prison on the charge.

 

Contraband Seized

 

Staff at Collins Bay Institution have seized three packages of contraband on the perimeter of the medium security unit.  The Correctional Service says two packages were found around 11 am on Monday and contained tobacco, marijuana, multiple smartphones and accessories.

The third package was found around 10am on Tuesday.  It contained marijuana officials say would have been worth 44 thousand dollars inside the prison.

Police and the Correctional Service are investigating and no arrests have been made.

 

Correctional Officers Union – New Pres

 

The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers has a new president.

Jeff Wilkins of Atlantic Canada has been elected to replace Jason Godin of Kingston.

Godin has been on the union executive for 18 years and was a founding member of the union that represents 7,300 correctional officers at federal prison in Canada.

 

RMC – Graduation

 

Cadets at the Royal Military College had a special guest on hand for their graduation ceremony.

Governor General Julie Payette has received an honorary degree from RMC yesterday.

The graduating cadets officially become officers today and will receive their Canadian Armed Forces Commissions during commissioning parade.

Two training planes from 15 Wing in Moose Jaw will conduct a flyover of RMC around 9:45 this morning.

 

Victoria Day

 

It is the Victoria Day long weekend and yes…there will be fireworks in Kingston.

There were some fireworks and the Skyhawks parachuted into the parade square at RMC last night for their graduation celebration.

And there will be fireworks Sunday night to top of the city of Kingston’s Victoria Day celebrations at Lake Ontario Park.  Things get underway at 1pm with live music starting at 6pm and the fireworks are set to take place at 9:30 Sunday night.

 

Tourism Kickoff – Fort Henry

 

Fort Henry opens tomorrow for its 81st season as a living museum.

The Fort and Kingston Pen are Kingston’s top tourist attractions.

Kingston Pen is already open for tours and Fort Henry kicks off its season tomorrow.

 

Plant Swap

 

It’s gardening time and if you have extra plants in your garden…the Kingston Frontenac Public Library has is holding its first ever plant swap tomorrow.

People will be able to share extra plants or seeds with other gardeners during the session starting at 2pm on Saturday at the Isabel Turner Branch of the Library.

 

Plant Sale

 

There’s another opportunity for gardeners in Kingston on Saturday.

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority and Friends of Lemoine Point are holding the annual native plant sale from 9am to 3pm tomorrow.

Trees, shrubs and wildflowers will be available for sale, with all proceeds going back to support the nursery used for various reforestation activities at the popular conservation area.

 

Deck Building

 

If you are wondering if you need a permit to build that deck this spring or summer…the answer is yes – if it is going to be two feet or more above the ground.

There’s a workshop at Home Depot tomorrow on deck building and the regulations in Kingston.

The City of Kingston’s building department is holding the workshop to go over how to apply for a permit, design considerations and what building inspectors will look for when you are finished.
