Shot Fired

Water Levels

Water levels on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River have dropped enough to be just below flood levels…but a lack of rainfall in July and August has led to a Level 1 drought advisory for the area.

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority issued the advisory on Friday for the area from Napanee to Brockville and north to Newboro.

A Level 1 advisory means there is the potential for water supply problems if there is a lack of rainfall this fall.

Research – Queen’s

The Director of the Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre is leading a three-year research project on use of new opioid drugs to treat inflammatory bowel disease.

Stephen Vanner has received a $375,000 grant to investigate delivery of opioids to specific targets to reduce pain.  One of the drugs inhibits pain sensing nerves in a unique way that leads to sustained pain relief…another targets only nerves in inflamed tissues.

If the research is successful, the next step will be clinical trials of the drugs.
