Fatal Crash

The victim of a fatal crash east of Kingston early Tuesday has been identified as a young woman from Gananoque. Leeds OPP says 18-year-old Emily Smith was the driver and only person in a car that hit a concrete overpass on Deer Ridge Drive in Leeds and Thousand Islands Township.

Police were called to the single vehicle crash around 4:40 yesterday morning.

 

Attempted Robbery

Kingston Police are looking for a suspect after an attempted robbery.

A woman walking on the east sidewalk of Armstrong Road north of Bath Road around 9:30 Monday night was pushed to the ground by a man.

The man rummaged through her backpack but fled when a bus went by.

The man failed to get anything.  The woman suffered minor injuries.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

 

Mayors – Water Levels

The Mayors of six eastern Ontario municipalities including Napanee, Prince Edward County and Belleville are demanding an immediate drop in the water level on Lake Ontario.

The mayors met yesterday and have demanded the International Joint Commission revert to its old plan for water levels.  Lake Ontario is 21 inches above its normal level for this time of year and the mayors say the high level may lead to disastrous flooding next spring.

 

Nobel Prize Winners

Two Nobel Prize Winners will be sharing their insights into research success during a sold-out public discussion at the Isabel Bader Centre for Performing Arts this afternoon.

It is part of the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative and Queen’s University is one of four universities to host the initiative on its first-ever Canadian tour.

Queen’s Nobel Prize winning Physicist Art McDonald and Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie…the 2008 Nobel winner for Chemistry will be speaking along with Canada’s Chief Science Advisor…Mona Nemer.

 

All Candidates

Some of the candidates were missing from an all candidates meeting in Kingston.

Kingston and the Islands Liberal candidate Mark Gerretsen and Conservative candidate Ruslan Yakoviychuk skipped the session last night organized by the Food Policy Council.  Yakoviychuk did send a written statement that was read at the session.

Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston Conservative candidate Scott Reid and People’s Party candidate Matthew Barton also failed to show up for the session focusing on food and farming.

 

Fort Fright

Fort Fright is returning to Fort Henry.

The 12th year for the Halloween themed event will open on Friday, October 4th.

Officials say the 2019 Fort Fright experience will be more immersive than ever and will feature an improved customer flow.  Among the features will be the Mindset Research facility with phobia arenas for the things that trigger people’s worst fears.

Chamber – New Office

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce is holding the Grand Re-Opening of its offices today.

The Chamber has moved from Innovation Park to the Alliance Business Centre at 299 Concession Street.  Mayor Brian Paterson will cut the ribbon at 10:30 this morning.
