Cadet Death

Two Royal Military College of Canada cadets have died in the past two weeks and the commandant is urging students, staff and faculty to take advantage of counselling being provided by the college.

20 year old Brett Cameron of London died on Saturday.  Cadet Harrison Kelertas died two weeks ago.  The two had been friends and were in the same squadron.

RMC Commandant, Brigadier General Sean Friday says it has shaken the RMC family deeply.

Rideau Canal

The federal government is spending a total of $14 million on upgrades at the Kingston Mills Locks as part of $57.3 million in improvements to Rideau Canal.  The improvements will be made along the route of the canal from Kingston to Ottawa.

The work at Kingston Mills includes $9.5 million on the locks for stone replacement, stone repair and repointing.

The fixed bridge will also be replaced at a cost of $2.2 million and $2.3 million is being spent to upgrade the Kingston Mills swing bridge.

Millhaven Lockdown

A search is underway at a lockdown is in place at the Maximum Security Millhaven Institution after weapons were found by correctional officers.

The Correctional Services says homemade knives and shanks were found on Friday.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

Media Tour – Collins Bay

The media got a behind the scenes look at Collins Bay Penitentiary on Tuesday.  The Correctional Service invited the media to tour the minimum, medium and maximum security facilities on Bath Road across from the Frontenac Mall.  Warden Curtis Jackson says having the three levels of security in one location has made it more efficient to move inmates.

Jackson says the media visit was organized because it’s a priority of the federal government to show the positive work being done in correctional facilities.

Vision Kingston

A public meeting is being held tonight by a group that is opposed to high rise development in downtown Kingston.

Vision Kingston is hosting the session from 6:30 to 9:00 tonight in the Wilson Room of the downtown branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library.

It has organized a panel of people to speak on heritage architecture and affordable housing.

A 3D model will also be on display to show the scale of various alternatives to the three high rise building being proposed for the downtown.

Chat

Mayor Bryan Paterson wants to chat.

The mayor is launching an initiative to meet and talk with people wherever he is attending an event.  A “Chats with the Mayor” banner will be raised at those events.

Paterson says it is important for him to talk directly with city residents about important issues like downtown high rises, the airport expansion, the Third Crossing and Kingston Penitentiary site.

Fort Mac Fundraising

You can make a donation to the Red Cross fundraising efforts for Fort McMurray at any of Kingston’s fire stations tonight.  Fire halls were open from 6 – 8:30 last night and will be again tonight for the public to meet local firefighters, check out their equipment and make a donation to the Red Cross Fort McMurray fund.

Day of Dance

Over 3,000 local students will be dancing at Fort Henry today.

It’s the annual KFL&a Public Health’s Celebration of Dance.  Students will show off the dance routines they’ve been learning and getting physical activity during the outdoor dance party.
