Property Tax Increase

Kingston City Council has officially set the property tax increase for this year at an average of 2.5%.  The rate had already agreed to by council last fall.  The city has to formally pass a bylaw to boost the tax rate and council didn’t hesitate to pass that bylaw last night.

Kick and Push

A theatre festival in downtown Kingston is getting some big breaks thanks to Kingston City Council.

The Kick and Push festival won’t have to cover the cost of venue rental, the staff costs or ticket fees at the Grand Theatre.  Council agreed to waive the fees for this year and next year – a break for the festival worth $64,500.

Let’s Talk Cancer

High school students will be talking about cancer with the top cancer researchers in Kingston.

The students will learn about cancer biology and the challenges of cancer research.  They’ll take part in hands-on activities and seminars from world-renowned scientists during the session in the Biosciences Complex at Queen’s.

The students are being hosted by Let’s Talk Science and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Research Information Outreach Team.

Organ Donations

About 45% of residents in the Kingston area have registered for organ donations according to the Trillium Gift of Life Network.  That’s far above the provincial average of 29%.

The agency says 16 people made organ donations at Kingston General Hospital last year.

Final Kilometre

They have one kilometre left to go.

About a thousand students from the Kingston area will gather at Caraco Home Field to complete the final kilometre of their marathon or half marathon.

The students have logged the distance of a marathon or half marathon – minus the one kilometre – over the past few months.

KFL&A Public Health says it is a way to promote physical activity and celebrate the upcoming Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Town becomes City

From Tony’s Today in History file…Kingston becomes a city.

Kingston was first incorporated as a town in 1838…eight years later…on May 18, 1846 Kingston was incorporated as a city.

There is no official celebration being held to mark the 170th anniversary of Kingston becoming a city.
