Canada Day Flag Burning

The Tyendinaga Mohawk Council has issued a statement saying it does not support the burning of a Canadian flag in Kingston during the Canada Day parade.  It says the masked people were not acting on behalf of the Mohawk community.

Two of the people involved in the flag burning were carrying a Mohawk Warrior flag.

Kingston Police say the group didn’t do anything illegal but they’d like to identify the six people in case they have been involved in other incidents or become involved in something in the future.

Crash – Rescue

Frontenac OPP says charges are pending after a fiery head on collision on Highway 15 at Leo Lake Road early Saturday morning.

Police were called about the crash around 6:15 Saturday morning.  A pickup truck and car collided…the engine of the car caught fire and the driver was rescued by a Kingston man who pulled him out of the vehicle.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Wine Dispute

It has to be Kingston when…a guy steals two bottles of someone’s homemade wine – won’t give it back – then dumps it and threatens the person with a rock when they call the cops.

Kingston Police says that’s what happened at an apartment in the 300 block of Alfred Street Saturday night.

51 year old Bruce Laraby has been charged with assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause bodily harm and two counts of breach of probation.

Shoplifting Spree

A shoplifter is facing charges after a man saw him take off from security at the Canadian Tie at 59 Bath Road around 3p.m. on Sunday.

The citizen chased down the man and restrained him in a parking lot across the street and behind the Shoppers Drug Mart.  The Canadian Tire security guard cuffed the man and police arrived on the scene.

A 32 year old man from Inverary has been charged with theft under $5,000.

A news release from Kingston Police says he was on three separate probation orders from Cornwall and Kingston, all relating to prior theft convictions and other offences.

Economic Development

The future of economic development in Kingston may be decided during a special meeting of city council.

The session tomorrow night will discuss the recommendations from the committee that reviewed the Kingston Economic Development Corporation.

It is recommending Tourism Kingston become a separate agency and the economic development portion of the agency be reorganized and rebranded.

Shrine Hospital Donation

The Kingston District Shrine Club has made a donation of $401,000 to the new Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal.

The money is funding a new centre where surgeons learn surgical techniques in a simulated setting.

The majority of the money came from the estate of a Shriner’s widow and the local Shriners chose the pediatric simulation centre to receive the funding.

Matching Donations

The estate of Larry Gibson has announced it will match up to $30,000 in donations to Loving Spoonful in Kingston.  Jay Rayner…the investment adviser and co-executor of Gibson’s estate says Larry would have been a huge fan of Loving Spoonful’s work. All donations to Loving Spoonful through July 30th will be matched by the Estate of Larry Gibson up to $30,000.

Loving Spoonful has a goal of providing over 70,000 pounds of fresh food to 30 local agencies this year.
