City Council – Decisions

Kingston may develop its own system of carbon pricing.

City council discussed the issue last night and agreed on a motion to have the Kingston Environmental Advisory Forum research and report on whether the city can create and use a cost of carbon system.

Kingston city council has finally approved the Transportation Master Plan – some councillors felt it doesn’t put enough emphasis on transit and active transportation.

Council also approved hiring a consultant for a $600,000 study into development of the Inner Harbour Area.

It is called…The Community Visioning Exercise and Preliminary Market Analysis for the North King’s Town Secondary Plan.  It will look at redeveloping the area that includes the former Davis Tannery, Belle Park and the proposed right-of-way for the Wellington Street Extension.

City council has approved a motion to proclaim December 20th of this year to December 20th, 2016 as “year of 175th Anniversary Celebrations for Kingston Police.

Man Arrested

A 44 year old Kingston man is facing multiple charges after being arrested with a pellet rifle and two folding knives.

Police say the man had been seen pacing outside a home on Conacher Drive with what appeared to be a rifle.  It turned out to be a pellet gun.

The man is facing charges including Mischief, Weapons Dangerous, Breach of Recognizance and Breach of Firearms Prohibition.

Lock it or Lose It

You might find a notice on your windshield from Kingston Police.

Officer and community volunteers will be visually inspecting vehicles for security in their Lock it or Lose It campaign.

They won’t be trying to get into vehicles but will check for things like valuables being in plain view or anything else that might tempt thieves.

The notice contains tips and a description of the program.

Giving Tuesday

Big Brothers Big Sisters Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has received a big boost from the estate of Larry Gibson.

The estate has agreed to provide matching funds of up to $10,000 for all donations received by the organization in the month of December.

The announcement was made yesterday at Big Brothers Big Sisters charity gift wrapping centre at the Cataraqui Centre.

New Rembrandt – Queen’s

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen’s will be home to a new $60 million dollar Rembrandt painting.

The painting called…Portrait of a Man with Arms Akimbo…has been given to Queens by Alfred and Isabel Bader.  It is dated 1658.  The Art Centre is home to two other pictures by the famous artist.  The new addition will be on display with The Bader Collection of Rembrandts starting in May of the new year.

Harper Painting

The nude painting of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper by Kingston Artist Margaret Sutherland has sold for 20 thousand dollars.  It was twice the amount the original owner was hoping for.  She bought the painting for $5,000.

Emperor Haute Couture was bought by a man in Vancouver who plans to have it displayed in galleries and arts schools around the country.
