Maclean’s – Top Ranked Universities

Many consider it required reading for parents and high school students planning to make the next educational step. MacLean’s magazine has released its 2017 ranking of Canadian universities.

Queen’s University holds its number 4 spot in the medical doctoral category. UBC is third, the University of Toronto is second and McGill is ranked first.

McGill was ranked 12th in student satisfaction…Queen’s came in third in student satisfaction.

Student Found

A Queen’s University student who hadn’t been seen since October 15th has been found.

Ian McParland was found by police at the Kingston bus terminal on John Counter Boulevard at around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday.  A news release from police says he was transported to a place of safety and his family was notified.

Protest – Kingston General

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says a thousand hospital staff from around the province will stage a protest outside Kingston General Hospital today.

The union says the merger of Kingston General Hospital with Hotel Dieu Hospital will further cut beds and services.  It says KGH has been without an available bed for up to 25 days in the last year.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says Ontario spends less on hospitals than other provinces and that has translated in cuts to hospital budgets and the number of beds available to treat patients.

Union President Mark Hancock will speak at the noon hour rally on the Stuart Street side of the hospital.

Joynt – Trial Update

The jury will continue its deliberations today in the trial of a 75 year old Kingston man charged with molesting teenage boys.  The jury spent almost nine hours trying to come to a decision yesterday.

They’re trying to determine if Neil Joynt is guilty on two charges of indecent assault against a male and one count of sexual assault.  The charges date back to the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. Joynt testified in his own defence saying he never molested the 12 to 14 year old boys.

Break In – Tires and Rims

The OPP is investigating the theft of expensive vehicle tires and rims from Williams Auto on County Road 6 in Loyalist Township.  The items were stored in large shipping containers and a box trailer.

The break in took place sometime between last Friday night and Monday morning.

Anyone with information about the burglary at Williams Auto is being asked to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Glass Jar of Pot

A man from Stone Mills Township faces a charge of possession of marijuana after police stopped a vehicle they thought was being operated by an impaired driver.

A Napanee OPP officer spotted a mason jar with marijuana in it when the vehicle was stopped on Saturday.  The 32 year old man was charged with possession of under 30 grams of marijuana.

Smoke Bust

A Kingston man has been charged under the Tobacco Tax Act with possession of unmarked cigarettes after a vehicle was stopped during a RIDE program at the 401 eastbound and Highway 49 in Tyendinaga Township.  Police seized five bags containing a total of a thousand cigarettes.

Cat Trail Closure

A section of the Cataraqui Trail between Harrowsmith and Portland/Camden Boundary Road will be closed starting today.  It will be closed for two weeks while trail improvements are completed.

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority is asking users to avoid the area.
