Hit and Run

Kingston Police hopes the public will be able to help track down the vehicle and driver that hit a pedestrian and left her in critical condition in hospital.  The 41 year old woman was hit on Princess Street west of Midland Avenue around 7:20.  The eastbound vehicle took off and police believe it went through the McDonald’s parking lot and headed north on Midland Avenue.  Police says the gray or silver GM style vehicle will have extensive damage to its front grill and headlight assembly.  Anyone with information about the hit and run is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

Princess Street was closed while police investigated the hit and run crash.

RE/MAX – Housing Prices

RE/MAX Realty says the average sale price of a home in Kingston this year was $305,600…a 3% increase over 2015.  The company released its 2017 Housing Market Outlook yesterday. It says low interest rates contributed to a brisk real estate market in Kingston this year with residential sales up 12.5 per cent compared to 2015.  Its forecast for next year predicts the average price of a home in Kingston will increase 2%.

School of Biz – Economic Forecast

Business leaders in Kingston have been encouraged to help create conditions for local economic growth.

The Queen’s Smith School of Business held its 35th annual Business Forecast Luncheon yesterday.  Marketing Professor Ken Wong emphasized the need to broaden the tax base, foster more population growth and increase private sector investment in Kingston.

When it comes to the economic outlook for next year…Assistant professor Evan Dudley told the gathering he expects the economy to grow by 1.75%.  Dudley says current conditions will continue next year with unemployment hovering around 7 per cent…the exchange rate for the dollar holding at 75 cents U-S and the prime rate staying at 2.7%.

Water-Regulation

Officials in Canada and the U.S. have signed a new plan to regulate water levels and flows in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River that they say will help restore coastal ecosystems. Plan 2014 will set the flows through the Moses-Saunders Dam on the St. Lawrence between Cornwall and Massena, New York.  The International Joint Commission says Plan 2014 will allow for more natural variations in water levels and help improve habitat for fish and wildlife.

Napanee Sex Assault – Sentence

A Napanee man has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting a young girl.

52 year-old Gregory Vautrin had pleaded guilty to sexual assault and luring a person under 16 years of age by means of telecommunication.  Vautrin was arrested in May following an investigation into the sexual assault of a girl in Napanee in April.   The age of the victim was never disclosed.  Besides the prison time he’ll be on the National Sex Offender Registry for the rest of his life.

High Risk Takedown

The Kingston Police emergency Response team has arrested a man from Calgary at gunpoint.

Police were checking license plates at the Knights Inn parking lot yesterday morning and found a warning posted on the Canadian Police Information database about a man who may have a gun.

A 28 year old man was arrested around 11:30 yesterday morning.  Police found a pellet pistol, switchblade knife and 23 grams of marijuana.  He appears in court today for a bail hearing on a variety of charges.
