School Transportation Cancelled

A freezing rain warning led to the cancellation of all school buses today.

Tri-Board Student Transportation cancelled school transportation for the Limestone District School Board, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board and Hastings Prince Edward School Board.

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario cancelled all school transportation for the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario and the Upper Canada District School Board.

Child Pornography Charge

The OPP says its child pornography investigation is continuing after the arrested of a 52 year old man from Seeleys Bay.

Peter Mark Pettem was arrested on Thursday of last week.  Pettem has been charged with two counts of possession of child pornography.

He is being held in custody until a bail hearing takes place this Thursday in Brockville.

Mother Sentenced

A 22 year old Kingston woman has been sentenced after her 21 month old daughter suffered a fractured skull and brain damage.  But – the woman wasn’t sentenced for causing the severe injury to her daughter in October of 2015.  The charge of aggravated assault was dropped.  She pleaded guilty to common assault for throwing her daughter onto a couch in the home she shared with her boyfriend.

She was given credit for six months in custody and sentenced to time served plus three years of probation.

KT Record Year

Kingston Transit says 2016 was a record year.

It says there were a total of 5.2 million rides on Kingston Transit buses last year…an 11.4% increase over 2015.

Transit Manager Jeremy DaCosta says growth in ridership can be attributed to adult riders using the bus to get to work.  Rides by people using commuter passes increased by 25% and rides under the Employer Transpass program increased by 20%.

Trade Mission

Kingston’s trade mission to China has returned and Mayor Bryan Paterson says he’s looking forward to discussing what happened during the trip.

Paterson and the Chair of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation, Judith Pineault, will answer questions from the media today.

Paterson says he’s expecting positive things for Kingston’s economy after visiting Feihe International.  The Kingston delegation was invited to visit China by the company that is building a baby formula factory in Kingston.

Habitat Session

Habitat for Humanity Greater Kingston & Frontenac is looking for three families wishing to become homeowners this year. The organization is hosting an information session tomorrow night for people interested in learning more and it is accepting applications.

The session will take place from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. tomorrow at 607 Gardiners Road…the new ReStore location.
