No Bag Tags

Kingston will not have a bag tag system for garbage – at least not in the near future.
The city’s Environment, Infrastructure & Transportation Policies Committee put the idea on hold during its meeting last night.
A survey will be done by Waste Management before the idea comes up again.
Councillors Peter Stroud and Jim Neill had proposed the city give people 52 bag tags a year with extras costing two dollars each.

Repatriation

Hundreds of people gathered outside CFB Trenton and on the bridges over the Highway of Heroes as the body of Sergeant Andrew Doiron was returned to Canada.
Doiron is first Canadian soldier killed in the coalition mission to defeat Islamic militants in Iraq.
His body arrived at CFB Trenton yesterday afternoon and was taken to Toronto for an autopsy.
The special operations soldier was killed by Kurdish friendly fire on Friday.

Car Crash – Credit Union

A large pane of glass next to the front door of the Kingston Community Credit Union in the Kingslake Plaza was shattered when a car hit the front of the building.
Police say the driver apparently stepped on the gas instead of the brake and his car slammed into the front of the Credit Union in the plaza on Division Street.
Nobody was injured in the crash around 5:30 yesterday afternoon.

Ash Trees

Hundreds of the ash trees in Kingston will be cut down this spring because of the emerald ash borer.
The trees on city property are being marked for removal this week.
Approximately 400 of the ash trees will be removed this spring.
The city says they are in poor condition.
Kingston has about 35 hundred ash trees on city property.  600 are being treated with a bio-insecticide…but the majority of the others will be cut down and replaced with types of trees.
