KP and POH Visioning

Two groups of 50 people will get to discuss the final concept for the future of Kingston Penitentiary and the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour during workshops today.  Consultants have finalized the final concept and it will be presented during the workshops.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says the final concept won’t contain all of the details and further comments from the public will be possible before it moves on the city council.

Pre-Hearing  – Capitol Condo

The Ontario Municipal Board is holding a pre-hearing on the proposed 15 storey Capitol condominium in downtown Kingston starting today.    The pre-hearing is supposed to finalize the issues and who is going to be taking part in the actual appeals to the Ontario Municipal Board.  A full hearing could take place this fall.

Two community groups and two individual have filed appeals over plans for the building saying it is too high for Kingston’s downtown.

No Charges – Fatal Collision

No charges will be laid in two vehicle crash in November of 2015 that claimed the life of a 12 year old boy from Sydenham.  Travis Babcock died in hospital following the crash on November 1st of 2015 at Highway 38 and McIvor Road.  The Whig reports the accident reconstruction officer with Kingston Police has been unable to determine who was at fault in the crash.

OPSEU – Liquor Store Protest

A group of liquor store employees braved the rain in Kingston on Saturday to protest privatization of public services.  The members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union say expanding the sale of beer and wine in grocery stores is robbing money the province uses for health care, education, hospitals and other social services.  They say it also threatens their jobs.   The protest took place outside the LCBO at the corner of Princess Street and Bath Road.

Cross Canada Cycle

Two men from Kingston are planning to cycle across Canada and document it for the rest of the country.  Jonathon Reed and Assad Chishti are both photographers and plan to interview people along the way and present their stories and feelings about what is important as a Canadian.

The two men are raising 15 thousand dollars to finance the journey through an online Kickstarter campaign and have already raised over 13 thousand.

They plan to start the cross country cycling tour on the east coast in May.
