Sexual Assault

 

A 68-year-old Kingston man has been charged with sexually assaulting his adult granddaughter.  Investigators say the man invited the woman to move into a basement apartment at his home in mid-September.  Police say the woman was assaulted twice in the apartment and contacted them on October 19th.

The man turned himself in at police headquarters on Wednesday and was later released after being charged with two counts of sexual assault.

 

Sexual Extortion

 

Kingston Police are warning people not to share pictures or videos they would not want made public, after multiple reports of sexual extortion.  Investigators say they’ve received five complaints from men who were contacted through social media by someone posing as a woman.  The men were persuaded to send pictures or videos involving nudity and sexual acts and then threatened with having those pictures sent to everyone on their friends list if they didn’t pay up to $1,000.

 

King Street Closed

 

King Street West was closed this morning between Country Club Drive and Trailhead Place.

A vehicle collided with a utility pole and brought down a power line on the road.  Utilities Kingston had to make repairs before police could investigate the crash scene.

 

Another Suspicious Fire

 

You can add a fire at a vacant building on Maple Road in Loyalist Township to the list of those being investigated by police.

The OPP says the cause of a fire is suspicious and is under investigation by the crime unit, Loyalist Fire and Rescue and the office of the Fire Marshall.

The building was fully engulfed in flames with firefighters arrived yesterday morning.

 

CUPE – Hospital Assaults

 

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says a survey of hospital staff in Kingston found 78% of respondents had experience an incident of physical violence in the past year.

The union says the rate in Kingston is 10% higher than the provincial average.  It’s wants hospitals to make it easier to report assaults and have patients charged by police.

The Kingston Health Sciences Centre says it takes the issue seriously and has already made it easier for staff to report assaults.  It says it has also launched a violence prevention program.

 

Remembrance Day

 

People will gather for Remembrance Day ceremonies tomorrow and the city service is set for the Cross of Sacrifice at the Cenotaph on King Street at the foot of George Street.

Organizer say spectators should be in place by 10:40 to see the parade march on ahead of the service.

 

The Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Brigade Association will host a Remembrance Day Memorial Service at the RCHA National Memorial in City Park.

 

The Princess of Wales Own Regiment will march to the PWOR Monument in City Park at King and Sydenham Streets following the civic ceremony for its service.

 

HMCS Cataraqui will march to the Naval monument in Navy Memorial Park on Ontario Street between Lower Union and Gore Street following the civic ceremony.

 

CFB Kingston will hold a ceremony at the Vimy Gate at 11 a.m.

 

Hometown Hockey

 

Rogers Hometown Hockey will pay tribute to the military and Gord Downie when it stops in Kingston this weekend.

The two days of activities at the Royal Military College gets underway tomorrow following Remembrance Day activities.  There with a ball hockey game against former NHL stars including Bernie Nicholls, Paul Coffey, Brad May, Al lafrate, Dave Reid and Wayne Primeau.

The broadcast on Sunday will take place in the parade square at RMC…Ron MacLean and Tara Slone will have a variety of guests…they’ll be joined by Don Cherry and will have a feature on Verona native Mike Smith who is Calgary’s goalie.   Gord Downie’s brothers, Patrick and Michael, will also be on the show promoting the Gord Downie Chanie Wenjack Fund.
