Fatal Crash

 

A head on crash on Highway 2 east of Napanee at 12:16 a.m. on Saturday claimed the life of a 17 year old female passenger.  Napanee OPP says two vehicles were involved in the crash just east of Violet Road.  A minivan also struck one of the vehicles involved in the first collision.

The 20 year old driver of one of the vehicles was taken to Kingston General Hospital with injuries…his 17 year old female passenger died at the scene.
Offender – Returned to Canada

 

A sex offender who took off from a halfway house in Kingston in 2013 is now behind bars at the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee.

49 year old Kenneth Wayne Froude was arrested in San Bernardino, California in October of 2015.

He had been fighting his extradition to Canada.

Froude is now facing charges from Kingston Police of breaching his long-term supervision order and failing to comply with the Sex Offender Information Registry Act.

Froude has an extensive criminal history, with four convictions for sex-related offences, including sexual assault and forcible confinement.

 

Sexual Assault

 

A 37 year old Kingston man is facing charges of assault, sexual assault and assault with a weapon dating back to 2013. Kingston Police say they just learned of the assaults that took place during a woman’s relationship with the man.  They say the victim ended the relationship in February of 2017.  The man was arrested last Friday at Kingston Police headquarters.

 

Tim Hortons – Protests

 

Three Tim Hortons locations in Kingston will be targeted today by the Fight for $15 and Fairness Campaign.  The campaign says workers at Tim Hortons continue to face reprisals at the hands of the parent company after the province increased the minimum wage to 14 dollars an hour.

A rally is scheduled for noon at the 312 Princess Street location.  Demonstrations are planned for the 285 Ontario Street and Cataraqui Centre locations at 5p.m.

 

Living Wage

 

Four local businesses will be honoured by Living Wage Kingston today.

The living wage is the amount of money a family of two adults working full time would need for themselves and two children. Open Door Media, Loving Spoonful, The Kingston Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation and Kingston Community Health Centres will all be honoured today for providing a living wage of at least $16.58 an hour.

 

First Capital

 

From Tony’s Today in History File…Kingston declared Canada’s first capital and the world’s first electronic computer.

It was on this day in 1841 Kingston was officially made the capital of Canada.

Kingston was capital for three years.  The city celebrates in June when the first parliament would have met in Kingston.

 

And it was on this day in 1946 that ENIAC…the world’s first electronic computer was turned on.

The Electronic Numerical Integration and Computer weighed several tonnes and contained 1,800 tubes.
