Human Remains

The remains of a man have been found in Kingston – but police haven’t confirmed they are the remains of a man who has been missing since Christmas Day.

A post on Friday night on a Facebook page set up by the Friends of James Switzer says it was his body that was found.

The 37 year old Switzer was last seen by his girlfriend on Christmas Day when he left their west-end apartment to get cigarettes.  His wallet was found about a month after he went missing.

Coalition – To Do List

The Coalition of Kingston Communities says it will be actively asking candidates running for city council this fall where they stand on transparency, accountability and open government.

The organization representing a variety of community groups has issued a 20 item “To Do” list for councillors.

One of the key items is inviting citizens to participate in budget planning and the city’s strategic plan.

The Coalition will be holding a public meeting later this month called – Do Municipal Elections Matter?  The session at the Isabel Turner Branch of the Library will take place April 17th at 6:00 p.m.

Sexual Assault – Victim App

Kingston Police have launched a smartphone app for victims of sexual assault.

The Sexual Assault Unit says the app called…Path of Strength…is available for Android and Apple devices.

It provides extensive information on where to find, support services in the community, how to report a sexual assault and more.

Civic Awards

The City of Kingston is asking for nominations for its annual Civic Awards.

The Awards for First Capital Distinguished Citizen, Honourable Achievement and Youth Volunteerism will be presented during the city’s Canada Day Ceremony.

The Youth Volunteerism Award offers a bursary of up to $2,000 for students.

Nomination forms are available at Kingston City Hall and on the City of Kingston’s website.

Holiday Monday

Today is a holiday for some people including elementary and high school students.

It’s also a holiday for people who work for the city of Kingston and other people who have it in their contracts.  City offices will be closed and there’s no garbage or recycling collection today…that takes place on the day after your regular day this week.  Kingston Transit is running on its regular schedule and most retail outlets will be open today including banks, beer and liquor stores and grocery stores.
