Pamela Cross – Award

A Kingston lawyer who is an outspoken advocate for women has been selected for the Laura Legge Award by the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Former Kingston city councillor Pamela Cross will receive the award during a ceremony on May 22nd at Osgoode Hall in Toronto.

The Laura Legge Award recognizes women lawyers from Ontario who have exemplified leadership within the profession.

 

Motion – Climate Technology Fund

Kingston city council will be asked to consider setting up a Kingston Climate Fund for residents to make donations to – above and beyond property taxes.

City Councillor Ryan Boehme is banking on people being willing to donate to the fund.

If his motion passes tonight staff will be asked to report back to council on how the city can set up the fund and establish grants to support local climate action initiatives and innovative technology.

 

Randy Hillier – Expelled from PC Party

A spokesperson for Premier Doug Ford is denying allegations Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier was kicked out of the Progressive Conservative Party for raising concerns about possible “illegal and unregistered” lobbying by Ford’s friends and advisers.  Hillier issued an open letter yesterday saying he was ousted after pushing back against party operatives constraining the voices of elected politicians.  Ford spokesperson Simon Jefferies says the allegations are an “outright lie.”

That hasn’t stopped the New Democrats and Ontario Public Service Employees Union President Smokey Thomas from calling for a police investigation into Hillier’s allegations.

 

Christchurch Vigil

About 150 people gathered in Confederation Park in Kingston for a vigil to remember the victims of the shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand.

People attending the vigil at 5:30 yesterday afternoon were from a variety of faiths and flags were lowered to half-staff to remember the victims.

 

St. Patrick’s Day Follow Up

It may have looked bad…but Kingston Police say the St. Patrick’s Day partying in the Queen’s University District wasn’t as bad as it has been in the past.

Police issued a news release late yesterday afternoon saying there were fewer large parties.

79 charges were laid under the Nuisance Party Bylaw and 118 for liquor violations and other offences.

Police say they will continue to work with community partners to reduce the impact of these activities on the community.

 

Cannabis Charge

A 22 year old man from Kingston has been charged with having cannabis readily available in his vehicle following a traffic stop on the eastbound 401 near Napanee.

The OPP says the driver was stopped around 1pm on Sunday.  The cannabis was seized and the driver was given the $215 ticket for having it readily available.

 

Kingston Robbery

Kingston Police are investigating a robbery that took place early Sunday morning.

Two men told police they were walking home at 2am when they were approached by a group of men in the area of Johnson and Victoria Streets.  One showed them a handgun.  The two victims handed over all of their money – went home and called police.

 

E-Waste

If you have old cell phones or computer equipment…St. Lawrence College has announced an e-waste drive for this weekend at its campuses in Kingston, Brockville and Cornwall.

They’ll be accepting everything from TV’s and computers to cell phones, keyboards and audio visual equipment.

The e-waste drive will run from 11am to 3pm.
