Demonstrations – Education

Parents upset about Ontario’s changes in autism funding and cuts to education have held a rally outside the offices of the Limestone District School Board.

They gathered outside the offices before trustees started their regular monthly board meeting last night.

During the opening of the meeting…trustees were told the school board will have to wait longer than usual to find out what funding they will be getting and  board staff is continuing to review the impact changes announced by the Ford government will have on the Limestone District School Board.

Teachers are planning a protest outside the office of Conservative MPP Daryl Kramp in Napanee tomorrow.

 

Child Pornography Sentence

A 52 year old Kingston man will be spending more time in jail after pleading guilty to charges of making child pornography available and voyeurism.

Mark Chamberlin has already spent almost a year at the Quinte Detention Centre.

Court was told he suffered a fractured jaw and broken teeth in as assault at the jail in Napanee.

Chamberlin was sentenced to serve the equivalent of another 20 months…followed by two years of probation. He’ll be placed on the sex offender registry and have his access to the internet restricted along with other conditions when he is released.

 

Shoplifting – Drugs

A 23 year old Kingston man caught for shoplifting at a west end store is also facing drug charges.

Kingston Police say the man was stopped by a loss prevention officer after leaving the store on Tuesday afternoon.  Police searched the man and say they found stolen merchandise…a large quantity of marijuana and crystal methamphetamine.  He’s been charged with theft, possession of over 30 grams of pot, possession of a controlled substance and breach of probation.

 

Dual Stream Recycling – Graffiti Wall

You’ll be able to put both your blue box and grey box out for pickup in Kingston on the same day…but not until the summer of 2021.  City council has approved a dual stream recycling system.  Mayor Bryan Paterson says the city will now have to purchase the equipment for the system.

 

City council has also approved a pilot project that will make the retaining wall in Douglas Fluhrer Park into a legal graffiti wall. Street artists will be able to use the wall starting this summer.  City staff will report back to council next spring on the success of the pilot project on the wall the park at the end of Wellington Street.

 

Day for Elimination of Discrimination

Kingston is taking part in a UNESCO initiative to connect people to their neighbours and strengthen communities.  Today is International Day for the Elimination of Discrimination.

You being encouraged to connect with someone from a different cultural background to learn something about that person and their culture.

 

Symphony – Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs and a Kingston Symphony Concert are on the schedule today and tomorrow for 2,500 grade four students from the area.

Music education students from Queen’s University have taught the students about the music they’ll be hearing today and tomorrow at the Carnival of the Dinosaurs concert.  It is by award-winning Canadian composer and Kingston resident Dean Burry.  Burry will be giving the narration during the concerts that will also feature music from Jurassic Park and Carnival of the Animals.

The symphony will have a special public presentation of the concert for families on Saturday afternoon.
